    Senior Software Developer

     

     

    I           BASIC FUNCTION

    Serve as senior software developer for Canal Barge’s application, integration and database systems, in close coordination with the Director of IS and KM.

     

    Responsibility for the development and maintenance of the Service-Oriented Architecture underlying our CBC-developed and vendor-provided applications.

     

    Assist with the coordination of building and interconnecting our software systems to meet that architecture, and provide technical and professional mentoring to and supervision of other developers and contractors.

     

    Assist the Director with ongoing development project planning.

     

    II         MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Design, supervise development resources for, and participate in the hands-on development and maintenance of CBC’s major application modernization and development, database, data warehousing, ETL/EDI/EAI, DevOps and CI/CD initiatives.
    2. Assist IS Director with developing and maintaining development plans for CBC.
      1. Develop and maintain inventory of CBC’s JAVA and Notes-based applications.
      2. Work with users and other staff developers to create a set of standards for software development and/or enhancements.
      3. Assist the Director to determine resources needed to support CBC’s identified needs and develop plan to provide same using CBC employees and 3rd party service providers as needed, and assist in interviewing and selecting technical staff.
    3. Help design, implement and maintain solutions for operational and logistical solutions for barges, boats and the terminal, and enterprise-wide integrated software and data systems.
    4. Help promote effective use of all IS applications.
      1. Provide higher-tier, escalated support for user issues when needed.
      2. Maintain active relationships with key internal customers to understand how they use CBC
      3. Provide or oversee system or technology upgrades when appropriate to help increase user productivity and ease of use of CBC
    5. Serve as an active technical advisor to the IS Director and the IS Liaisons group, assist the director in preparing plans, budgets and communications for the senior leadership and the Knowledge Management Steering Committee.
    6. Provide technical and professional mentoring and role modeling for the technology team.
    7. Participate in design reviews and assist in the creation of appropriate technical and support documentation. Exemplify the use of our coding standards including code comments where needed for clarity and maintainability.
    8. Manage various technology projects, supervise technical contributions, communicate status of projects to and perform other projects as assigned by the Director of Information Systems.
    9. Carry out the Business Philosophy, Code of Conduct, and Mission of Canal Barge Company, Inc.

     

    III       EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

    • Strong JAVA background – minimum of 8-12 years of work experience as a developer of JAVA and object-oriented business class applications.
    • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field; Master’s degree in Computer Science and/or relevant experience is strongly preferred.
    • Must have strong background in team technical leadership in software development projects for internal enterprise applications, including design, design patterns, user requirements, resource needs assessment and assignment, specification, coding to specifications, coding styles, design reviews, technical documentation, agile development methodologies, CI/CD, DevOps, and the use of change management and QA disciplines.
    • Experience with Lotus Notes and/or JAVA programming on the IBM iSeries/AS400 environment is helpful.
    • Should be familiar with many of the following technologies or their equivalents: JAVA SE and J2EE, C#, .Net, JavaScript, Node.js, Bootstrap, React, Eclipse, Domino Designer, XPages, SQL, Lotus Script, Spring Boot, Docker, Kubernetes, Maven, Hibernate, Apache Camel, EAI, JMS, JSF, Git, SVN, IBM Cloud/Bluemix, AWS, Azure, WebServices/REST, Master Data Management, AI microservices.
    • Required traits: strong technical leadership and project management skills, strong in organizing and managing the technical aspects of projects and optimized use of technical resources, excellent customer service orientation, communication, planning, personal initiative, teamwork, personal integrity.
