    I           BASIC FUNCTION

    The benefits administrator position is responsible for administering the day-to-day operations of Canal Barge Company’s group benefits programs (group health, dental, vision, short-term and long-term disability, life insurance and accident plan, flexible spending plan, HSA accounts, 401(k) plan and retirement plan, and other supplemental plans). The benefits administrator also provides excellent customer service and communicates the benefits to our employees and their family, investigates benefits questions and issues, improves existing programs, and works closely with the Benefits Manager, Benefits Consultant, Third Party Administrator, and the Human Resources team.



    1. Serve as day-to-day primary contact for plan vendors and third-party administrators. Coordinate transfer of data to external contacts for services, premiums and plan administration. Document and maintain administrative procedures for assigned benefits processes. Ensure compliance with applicable government regulations, including ACA, with timely and accurate reporting and fees.
    2. Administer employee benefits programs such as the group insurance, medical, accident, and disability insurance, 401k Savings Plan, Employee Service Awards, and other designated programs.
    3. Verify the calculation of the monthly premium statements for all group insurance. Resolves administrative problems with representative third party groups.
    4. Communicate benefits plans to employees. b.     Develop programs and presentations to improve employee awareness and understanding of benefits programs.
    5. c.     Provide information, as needed, and answers questions regarding benefits plans to employees and third parties.
    6. a.     Explain eligibility and enrollment procedures to all employees.
    7. Coordinate daily benefits processing. Handle enrollments, COBRA, terminations, benefit changes, beneficiaries, short and long term disability, accident claims, rollovers, distributions, loans, hardships and compliance testing. Oversee maintenance of employee benefits files, maintain group benefits database and update employee payroll records.
    8. Gather employee data and oversee the processing of monthly billings and the preparation of payment of vendors and payment of administrative fees for all group plans.
    9. Assure compliance with laws on all plans.

    The Benefits Administrator reports to the Benefits Manager who reports to the Vice President of Human Resources.




    1. 1-3 years experience in Human Resources preferred.
    2. Computer Skills: basic computer/keyboarding skills, basic knowledge of MS Office suite, proficiency in MS Excel is required.
    3. Requires a high level of initiative, attention to detail, high degree of self-management, and ability to build and foster positive relationships.
    4. College degree preferred, but not required.
    5. Prior Benefits Administration preferred but not required.
