TERMINAL – TEMP CHEMIST - PART TIME

 

I          BASIC FUNCTION

 

 Primary function is performing specified analytical and instrumental testing of water and wastewater, soil, solid waste, and raw material samples.  Must have the have experience in analytical chemistry testing.  This would include classical chemistry and some physical testing methods. Knowledge of environmental testing would be helpful.

 

II         RESPONSIBLITIES

  1. Testing requirements include: Total and suspended solids, pH, ammonia, specific gravity, Karl Fischer for water content, titrimetric procedures for acidity and alkalinity.
  2. Must have knowledge or be able to quickly learn ASTM procedures for raw materials testing and reporting.
  3. Must understand the fundamentals and underlying chemistry for the methods that are used in the laboratory and know the standard matrix interferences for the procedures being performed. Must be able to interpret, evaluate, and validate the analytical results from the test method.
  4. Some prior experience in standard laboratory instrumental analysis such as UV-VIS spectroscopy, and Ion Specific Electrode analysis is helpful.
  5. Comply with CTC HSSE Policies and Procedures.
  6. Provide routine maintenance to equipment and instrumentation as needed.
  7. Perform other duties as assigned by laboratory management. 

III       RELATIONSHIP

 

The Chemist reports to laboratory senior staff.

 

IV        EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

  1. Must possess at a minimum a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related science.
  2. Must have at least 5 years of actual laboratory experience.
  3. Must be detail oriented and have some prior experience in classical analytical, instrumental chemistry, and environmental testing.
  4. Must have excellent organizational and time management skills and be able to work independently without constant supervision.
  5. Must be cooperative and work well with other staff; be a willing team player.
  6. Prior experience in a multi-functioning industry or commercial laboratory helpful.
  7. Must be able to multi-task in a very demanding and fast-paced environment.

Physical requirements of the job include standing for long periods of time, carrying and transferring products.   

Channahon

Canal Barge Company Deckhands work on our fleet of Inland Towing Vessels. There is excellent opportunity for advancement, and extensive training is provided.

 

Qualified candidates must be safety-conscious and able to work in a physically demanding environment. The work schedule consists of 28 days on and 28 days off, with travel reimbursement. All applicants must have favorable work references and valid driver's license, and must pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screen.

Qualified candidates must be safety conscious and able to work in a physically demanding environment. Shore Tankerman must be on-call and be able to travel independently. Tankermen must hold a U.S. Merchant Mariner's endorsement as a PIC/DL, and must possess a current, valid TWIC.

  • Perform liaison role with customer dock personnel
  • Serve as first-line emergency responders

JOB DESCRIPTION

TERMINAL-CHEMIST II-ENVRONMENTAL TESTING

 

 I          BASIC FUNCTION

 

Primary function is performing specified analytical and instrumental testing of water and wastewater, soil, solid waste and raw material samples.  Must have the ability to evaluate, set-up and test new methods and procedures as required by new customers or products.  Must perform required QA testing in accordance with the method requirements.  Must be familiar with Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater 21th ED, SW 846 for the Analysis of Solid Waste, and relevant ASTM procedures.  Must have extensive knowledge and familiarity with the IEPA and USEPA requirements for sampling, monitoring and testing of wastewater, groundwater, soils, and solid waste.

 

II         RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform demanding and complicated methodologies for both environmental and raw material samples.
  2. Must be very knowledgeable of environmental sampling, testing, and reporting requirements for water, wastewater and solid waste analysis.
  3. Must be able to handle complex sample matrices and be able to determine how to overcome the matrix interferences.
  4. Must be capable of learning new techniques and procedures and instrumentation as required.
  5. Must be able to set-up and or develop new testing methods.
  6. Must understand the fundamentals and underlying chemistry for the methods that are used in the laboratory and know the standard matrix interferences for the procedure being performed.  Must be able to interpret, evaluate, and validate the analytical results from the test method.
  7. Must understand the customer and product base with regard to deadlines, permit requirements and sample peculiarities.
  8. Must become cognizant of the environmental samples data history in order to determine if the result is within the normal parameters for the sample. If not within the normal parameters determine if the result is correct for the current sample.
  9. Must be very observant in evaluating unusual samples and sample matrices to determine how to handle difficult samples or to seek help when necessary to solve the problem at hand.
  10. Some prior experience in standard laboratory instrumental analysis such as AAS,ICP, GC,GC/MS, and HPLC
  11. Comply with CTC HSSE Policies and Procedures.
  12. Work to improve productivity of laboratory methodology and assist in preparing or amending written laboratory protocol and procedures.
  13. Perform off-site sampling, testing, and training as needed.
  14. Provide routine maintenance to equipment and instrumentation as needed.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager.

  6. Prior experience in a multi-functioning industry or commercial laboratory preferred.
  7. Demonstrated proficiency in classical chemical testing such as gravimetric, titrimetric, spectrophotometric, and physical testing required.
  8. Knowledge of test development procedures, instrumentation and methods is required.
  9. Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve.
  10. Must be able to multi-task in a very demanding and fast-paced environment.
  11. Must possess good communication skills and written skills have good customer service skills. Must be able to write and amend current or new laboratory procedures.

Canal Barge Company Cooks work on our fleet of Inland Towing Vessels. The primary responsibilities of Cooks are to provide well-balanced, nutritious meals for CBC vessel employees while maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly galley.

Job Description

Part-Time Chemist II

Gas Chromatography (GC)/Mass Spectroscopy (MS) Environemental Chemist

 

The Chemist II position is a part-time, non-benefit eligible position based in Channahon, IL. Primary function is performing specified analytical and instrumental testing of water and wastewater, soil, solid waste and raw material samples.  Must have the ability to evaluate, set-up and test new methods and procedures as required by new customers or products. Must perform required QA testing in accordance with the method requirements. Must be familiar with Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wasewater 21st edition, SW 846 for the Analysis of Solid Waste, and relevant ASTM procedures.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Performs routine testing for both environmental and raw material samples including but not limited to:
    1. pH
    2. Chlorides
    3. Specific gravity
    4. Color
    5. Water
  2. Must know how to operate Purge and Trap (P/T) instruments and P/T auto samplers and GC auto samplers.
  3. Must have experince with operating software associated with all chromatography equipment.
  4. Must be very knowledgeable of environmental sampling, testing, and reporting requirements for water, wasewater and solid waste analysis.
  5. Must be able to handle complex sample matrics and be able to determine how to overcome the matrix interferences.
  6. Must be able to set-up and/or develop new chromatography testing methods using FID, PID, NPD and ECD detections.
  7. Must be able to interpret, evaluate, and validate the analytical results from the various chromatography procedures.
  8. Must understand the customer and product base with regard to deadlines , permit requirements, and sample peculiarities.
  9. Must know various extraction, sample clean up procedures, surrogate and inernal sandard requirements.
  10. Must be very observant in evaluating unsual samples and sample marices to determine how to handle difficult samples or to seek help when necessary to solve the problem at hand.
  11. Comply with CTC HSSE Policies and Procedures.

The Chemist Assistant will support the day-to-day operations of the laboratory to fulfill analytical testing requirements consistent with quality protocols. What you will be doing:

  • Conduct testing to meet quality and workload requirements
  • Comply with CTC HSSE policies and procedures
  • Collect environmental samples and other samples as needed. Decant or dispose of expired samples under the direction of laboratory staff.
  • Perform administrative duties including sample logging, data entry, filing, sample maintance and housekeeping
  • Assist laboratory staff in the performance of routine testing and sampling.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
