MARINE MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN

MARINE MAINTENANCE & REPAIR

 

I           BASIC FUNCTION

Provide support to CBC Boat and Barge Maintenance on inspecting, reporting on, performing preventive maintenance and repair activities, and training CBC personnel and third parties on Canal Barge Company maintenance procedures, reporting expectations, and basic troubleshooting. 

 

II         SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

The Marine Maintenance Technician has the overriding authority to fully perform all the responsibilities and duties assigned to this position:

  1. Perform maintenance, diagnose, disassemble, inspect, rebuild, and reassemble all components (such as engines, power trains, hydraulics, fuel systems, power generation, electronics, etc.) either in a shop, onboard, or at various locations with or without supervision.
  2. Work closely with CBC Boat and Barge Maintenance personnel and management on all aspects of Preventive Maintenance and Repair on CBC towboats and barges.
  3. Inspect equipment according to CBC inspection schedules and standards, or on an as-needed basis, and report on findings by entering into Sinex and/or providing written and/or verbal reports.
  4. Perform preventive maintenance and repair on equipment as required or directed.
  5. Troubleshoot problems and either resolve or make recommendations for resolution.
  6. Train vessel personnel in CBC maintenance procedures, standards and inspection schedules, and basic troubleshooting techniques.
  7. Examine systems and components for defects, such as breakage or excessive wear and tear. Report on and resolve issues if possible.
  8. Test machinery and equipment to verify successful operation after servicing.
  9. Read blueprints and technical manuals to insure correct installation and operations.
  10. Perform additional projects as assigned by the Boat and Barge Maintenance management.
  11. Carry out the CBC Mission, Business Philosophy, and Code of Conduct.
  12. Job is classified as heavy work; requires inside and outside work under various normal and adverse weather conditions, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling frequently over 50 pounds; walking, climbing reaching over shoulder, hand/eye coordination, twisting, working around unprotected heights, working around moving machinery, repetitive actions with both hands and feet.

 

III        RELATIONSHIP

The Marine Maintenance Technician is appointed by Manager, Field Operations and reports to the Sulphur, LA-based Assistant Port Engineer, and will be responsible for assisting both Boat and Barge Maintenance and working closely with CBC shore and vessel-based personnel and third-party vendors.

 

IV        EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION

  1. A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED is required.
  2. An Associates or Technical Degree or military training is preferred.
  3. 2 years of successful experience as a Maintenance Technician is preferred.
  4. A valid Transportation Workers Identification Credential (T.W.I.C) is required.
  5. Must have a current driver's license and good driving record.
  6. The ability to ride on inland towing vessels, as well as walk and access vessels and barges, as needed, is required.
  7. The ability to perform basic mathematical calculations such as, percentages, ratios and proportions.
  8. Basic computer skills such as: opening, creating and updating content in MS Word documents and Excel spreadsheets.
  9. The ability to work after hour call-outs.
  10. A strong working knowledge of electrical systems, diesel engine systems; installation, maintenance, repair and replacement.
  11. Ability to prioritize and respond to multiple business needs.

 

Sulphur

Canal Barge Company Deckhands work on our fleet of Inland Towing Vessels. There is excellent opportunity for advancement, and extensive training is provided.

 

Qualified candidates must be safety-conscious and able to work in a physically demanding environment. The work schedule consists of 28 days on and 28 days off, with travel reimbursement. All applicants must have favorable work references and valid driver's license, and must pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screen.

 

Primary Job Duties

  • Handle lines and wires
  • Make and break tow
  • Maintain barges in tow
  • Maintain cleanliness of the vessel and tow
  • Inspect equipment
  • Chip and paint decks and superstructure of the vessel

 

Physical Requirements

Physical requirements of the job include climbing ladders and stairs, repetitive bending and stooping, lifting heavy marine equipment, and lifting objects from various levels ranging from 10-100 pounds.

 

Rivers

Canal Barge Company Shore Tankerman are our internal experts in the transfer of liquid cargos.

 

Qualified candidates must be safety conscious and able to work in a physically demanding environment. Shore Tankerman must be on-call and be able to travel independently. All applicants must have favorable work references and a valid driver's license, and must pass a pre-employment physical examination and drug screen.

 

Tankermen must hold a U.S. Merchant Mariner's endorsement as a PIC/DL, and must possess a current, valid TWIC.

 

The main geographic targets for applicants include the Upper Ohio River Valley, Chicagoland, and the Gulf Coast.

 

Primary Job Duties

  • Conduct transfers of liquid cargos
  • Follow all safety, environmental, and barge processes to conduct incident-free transfers
  • Conduct inspections of barges prior to conducting transfers
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair of barges and pumps as necessary
  • Inspect all safety and transfer equipment
  • Perform liaison role with customer dock personnel
  • Serve as first-line emergency responders

MARINE ELECTRICIAN TECHNICIAN

Sulphur

Canal Analytical & Environmental Services currently has an opening for a part-time Chemist Assistant working out of our laboratory in Channahon, IL. The Chemist Assistant will support the day-to-day operations of the laboratory to fulfill analytical testing requirements consistent with quality protocols. What you will be doing:

  • Conduct testing to meet quality and workload requirements
  • Comply with CTC HSSE policies and procedures
  • Collect environmental samples and other samples as needed. Decant or dispose of expired samples under the direction of laboratory staff.
  • Perform administrative duties including sample logging, data entry, filing, sample maintance and housekeeping
  • Assist laboratory staff in the performance of routine testing and sampling.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Who we are looking for:

  • Intern or college student pursuing a degree in the Sciences with course work such as analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, instrumental analysis.
  • Must be a team player
  • Must possess good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Must be a quick learner and attentive to details
  • Must be able to follow directions and carry out assigned tasks
  • Physical requirements for the job include standing for long periods of time, carrying and transferring products. Individual will work outdoors in potentially inclement weather andat places with unusual terrain.
  • Must be able to lift between 10-50 pounds
